everything unfinished

| 1 MIN READ | on love & healing

memories turn into objects

some into ringing temple bells
that condense us
into vibrations
pretending to be people

others into invisible orphans
that wait endlessly
in our forgetting
refusing to be forgotten

everything unfinished in our lives
is simply waiting
to be loved

memories turn into objects
so they can break open our hearts
and become our prayers

-x-

This poem arose while doing a healing meditation centered on reconciling with an old and forgotten memory, untying a knot, embracing and releasing it . It reminded me that while the mind may forget, the heart remembers everything.

  1. Beautifully expressed.

To be truly liberated and set ourselves free
    “The knowing”
The “unfinished ” reflects to us the “complete:

“Only the one who has felt thirst will value the quality if water”

  2. Since memories aren’t just pictures saved in our memory box – but a culmination of perception that’s closely linked with the things going on around you and in your mind – experiencing a similar feeling can bring back memories because those two things are stored together.

It is important to bring happy memories associated with positve events – going to the temple, doing poor feeding & some simple joys of shopping with parents, watching a good movie, circus & enjoying a meal in a resturant. That list will also remain unfinished!

  4. The Venerable Nyanaponika Mahathera once told me there’s no such thing as memories, just acts of remembering. That’s a Buddhist perspective consistent with anatta (no-self).

Another way of looking at it is everything is memory, due to the connections between all things going back to the Big Bang and the traces their touches have left upon each other. That’s more consistent with advaita. Atma is Brahma and All is One.

I don’t know if they’re really different and don’t feel I have a stake in either, but one statement that seems wrong-headed to me is “I have memories”. “I am memories” seems more true, but only for certain values of “I”.
